. we've been following the 7.3 earthquake that hit the northeast coast of japan. now a small tsunami about a meter high has also hit. when you take a look at this video, you can see the shaking. the tsunami warning is still going off. people are being urged to flee to higher ground. no reports of any damage or injuries. the power stations are open, but some airports are closed until the runways are inspected. this, you might remember, the same region that was hit by a massive quake back in march of 2011. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. >>> today we could see the impact, the threat the fiscal cliff is having on our economy, even before the end of the year, the labor department will release its november jobs report this morning. many economists believe fewer than 100,000 new jobs were created this month. that may be because companies are waiting to hire more companies until after the financial crisis is resolved. superstorm sandy likely had an impact on the unemployment rate economisted expect the unemployment rate to remain at 7.9%. >>> president obama says this northern vir

looking good. >> off to a quiet start. we are following breaking news from japan. that is where a meter high tsunami has hit after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake. this follows the tsunami back in march of 2011. the tsunami was strong enough to shake buildings in tokyo. some 280 miles away -- an aftershock followed that. we are waiting any information of any damage. the 2011 quake killed 19,000 people. we will report on the story throughout the morning. >> a d.c. neighborhood plagued with flooding -- there is a major product -- project at a water filtration site. the bloomingdale neighborhood could be dry because of this project. this is the site where three storm drains converge. ." >> they took in a bunch of sewage water. >> when his home flooded or times in just four months this summer -- having dried out with no help from district officials he is hoping that he is one step ahead. >> we will have to hold our breath for next year. sandbags and such. >> d.c. water officials are hoping to have a new system in place to prevent this type of severe flooding as early as 2014. the plan? twofold.

the northeastern coast of japan are breathing ill easier. the earthquake struck offshore very close to the same place as last year's devastating earthquake. there have been no reports of serious damage but two people were reportedly occurrhurt. the last time there were this many patients visiting for the 2004.s in the center is expected to provide more details about the spread of the virus later today. a parade commemorating the anniversary of the bombing of pearl harbor. japanese bombers launched a surprise attack on the u.s. naval fleets. local survivors will commemorate the anniversary in new york. there will be a similar ceremony at the inner harbor in baltimore on the last surviving vessel afloat to witness the attack. >> fixed rate mortgages are on a bit of an uptick but they are still attracted to home buyers. the average rate rose to 3.34%. the 15-year rate also rose. it is helping to fuel a modest housing recovery. 58% of people plan to spend less on gifts than they did last year. people are finding the best deals on line. 64% are really enjoying the holidays this year. that brings us

warning in japan. take a look at this video we just got into the newsroom. the 7.2 magnitude earthquake has hit off the northern coast. you can see that trafblling camera moving as that quake hits. it shook and swayed buildings for several minutes. residents being told to flee to higher ground right now. at this point, no reports of any damage or injuries. this was the same region that was hit by a massive quake and tsunami in march of 2011. in that quake and tsunami, 19,000 people were killed or went missing. we'll keep an eye on this for you. >>> news outlets are reporting that north korea may set off a long range rocket as early as monday. the country is reportedly fueling the rocket, but satellite images show that heavy snowfall may have slowed down preparations. north korea wants to launch what it calls a peaceful satellite sometime before december 22nd. the u.s. believes the rocket is a cover test for missile technology. >>> the ongoing unrest in egypt has president obama speaking out. the white house says the president has called egyptian president mohamed morsi to express concer

in an earthquake in japan. it triggered tsunami warnings and fears of another disaster in that region. >> reporter: reporters in this tokyo news room braced themselves as the 7.3 quake rocked the building shaking monitors and lights and rattling nerves. skyscrapers swayed for several minutes. authorities issued a tsunami warning. the quake struck the same japanese coast devastated in last year's deadly quake and tsunami that killed 20,000 people. residents near the coast ran for cover as thousands evacuated to higher ground. workers at the fukushima nuclear plant were ordered to move so safety. last year's tsunami hit the reactor. this time the tsunami warning was lifted two hours after the tremor hit. there are no reports of serious damage from the quake but several people were hurt. tina kraus cbs news. >> more than 300,000 people are still living in temporary shelters after that massive 9.0 earthquake ask and tsunami last year. >>> one san rafael remembers the dark moments of that day, pearl harbor. he sat down with anne makovec to give his version of the attack and what he did to keep from get

for a full six-year term. voters in japan have chosen a new prime minister, shinzo abe. he led the liberal democratic party back to power on sunday, in a landslide victory. abe has pledged to ease monetary policy to pull japan out of its fourth recession since 2000. he also vowed to take a firm stance on territorial disputes with china. abe served as prime minister once before, but he quit in 2007, citing ill health. opponents of egyptian president mohammed morsi are sounding the call for nationwide protests again tomorrow against a constitution drafted by islamists. the opposition was bolstered after saturday's first round of voting on the document. only about a third of eligible voters turned out, as 57% approved the draft-- a much lower level of support than predicted. the second round of voting is saturday. those are some of the day's major stories. now, backo juy. >> woodruff: and we pick up now on some of the major questions being asked about guns, mental health and other issues in the aftermath of the shootings. we get four perspectives. dan gross is the president of the brady campa
